September 2006 Fitness Tip

Many of my articles have given you information on the benefits of exercise to help prevent disease and to improve mental and physical health even when you have all ready been diagnosed with an illness. I have written these articles based on various studies and from my experience working with clients. This month’s article is going to be different because now I am going to share information about my own health issues and how I am going to continue to exercise during the next year while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.

June 1, 2006 I was told that I had breast cancer and that I would have to have a lumpectomy followed by radiation and possibly chemotherapy. After this surgery took place on June 19th it was discovered that they were not able to get all the cancer and that it was in my lymph nodes. Because of my history with multiple biopsies I decided to have a double mastectomy. This surgery was completed July 28th.

There was cancer in both breasts. So I will have had my first chemotherapy treatment by the time this article is published. These treatments will go on for sixteen weeks followed by six weeks of radiation. This is not going to be easy.

The good news is that I exercise regularly so my heart is strong and I am going into this treatment pretty darn healthy. I will also continue my regular schedule of exercise and work as much as possible. There are many studies to prove that the healthier you are going into chemotherapy the better you will be able to recover from the treatments. There is evidence that exercise can help stimulate some of the cells in the immune system and help repair some of the damage done by chemotherapy. This information was from a study released at a Department of Defense breast cancer meeting by Andrea Mastro a professor of microbiology and cell biology at Pennsylvania State University.

So, I hope to prove these results for myself and help other people through example that Fitness is for Every Body.
