December Fitness Tip - Diet, Exercise and Breast
Cancer
Breast Cancer in America gets much attention. For more
than twenty years it has been seen as a Western world
disease. But now, with so many countries adopting the
ways of West, breast cancer is showing up across the
globe.
There are many things we, in America can be thankful
for; a higher standard of living, our freedom, access to
information and medical technology are just a few
examples. But, we are also one of the most overweight
and out of shape populations in the world. This is a
statistic that we all should make an effort to improve.
It has been shown that diet and exercise are an
important part of preventing many diseases, and breast
cancer is just one of them.
In the October 15, 2077, issue of Time magazine the
article “The Changing Face Of Breast Cancer”, Kathleen
Kingsbury, points to other countries changing to the
“meat sweet” diet of the Western world with more red
meat, sugar and processed foods. Physical exertion is
also decreasing in many countries as their technologies
increase. This combination of lack of exercise and a
Western diet is contributing to breast cancer becoming a
global disease. Of course, even if you do exercise and
eat a mostly healthful diet, a person can still develop
breast cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. But isn’t
it worth the effort to improve your chances of not
developing one or more of these diseases by taking care
of your body?
Debbie Saslow PhD., a spokeswoman for the American
Cancer Society, in an interview with CBS News states
that “Whether a person has had breast cancer or not, she
should be exercising and eating right.” This is a
statement that, I whole-heartedly agree with as a
fitness coach and breast cancer survivor.
So to wrap-up the year of 2007 and my articles about my
journey with breast cancer for the last year and a half,
I encourage you all to take a look at your lifestyle,
diet and exercise. See if there are things you can
change or improve, so that you hopefully, won’t have to
deal with disease, and that if you do, you will be
stronger and more prepared to face the battle and come
out on the winning side. |
